Blog among friends

A blog is a great way to get your message out to the world, to shout out the real story that you have to tell. It is a platform where no one can hold you back, limit you or tell you that you can’t. Blogs can be very powerful in their ability to get a message out; some even claim that blogs are responsible for getting the first Black President elected. So what is blog and what makes them so great?

In very basic terms a blog is just a website. It is a website however that does not require the user to know anything about websites, all you need to know how to do is type your message. Really, it’s that simple. Blog is short for weblog and they were originally used by developers as a way to rapidly update websites with text content. Later on blogs grew in function to allow all sorts of content from pictures to music and video.

In the past few years blogs have moved from the realm of the developers to the mainstream population. Basically a full website template is provided for you and you just need to fill in the title and the content. Facebook and MySpace are basically just spinoffs from blogs. They added a lot more to them and made them clique` but some feel that being part of such a large social site takes away from the individuality that blogs have become known for. And the search engines give less weight to social site pages because the posts entries tend to be one or two sentences rather than the several paragraphs needed to expand on a topic. This is important if you want to be found based on what you are writing rather than whom you know and what you look like.

There are quite a few choices for setting up a blog and getting your presence on line. One of the most popular ways is to use a blogging service like blogger or BlogSpot. With these guys you just set up an account and you are online in minutes. The downside is less flexibility in what you can do with your blog and having to use the services name as part of your blog name. Most bloggers probably don’t mind these things. If these things do matter to you is to purchase a domain and a hosting account and then install wordpress on your account. You will have complete control over your blog settings and a name that you picked.

Should You Blog or Go Traditional?

It seems that everyone has a blog these days. A blog is a website in every sense of the word. There is no technical difference between a blog and a traditional website. It is true that blogs do rely more heavily on PHP than HTML (two programming languages designed for web use) but there are plenty of purely PHP sites out there that have nothing to do with blogging. PHP was invented as a means of simplifying updates to web pages, that simplification is what led to the explosion of blogs. So what makes a blog webpage different? Well first you need to understand what blogs are different from.

A traditional webpage, written in HTML, required knowledge of the html programming language in order to make even minor changes to a web page let alone create a completely new one. And if you wanted to change the phone number that shows up on the bottom of your web pages you had to go in and change it on every page. PHP changed that. You would insert a block of PHP code that was labeled “phone number” into each of your pages. After that if you wanted to change the number you changed it in one place and it showed up on all of your pages. Very nice indeed.

Well then someone figured out that they could make a website where all the pages were identical except for the title of the page and the text of the article. So they used a bunch of PHP modules to design a web page template and any time you wanted to create a new page you simply typed the title and article text into the appropriate boxes and hit enter. So effectively, overnight, creating web pages went from requiring knowledge of programming languages to being able to type a title in one box and some text in another. How awesome is that?

Of course these early blogs were very simple in design. It took a while before the abilities to add music and pictures were added and there still remain a lot of limitations as to what you can do with a blog. Not because blog pages are not capable, a blog page can technically do anything that an html page can do; it’s just that no one has designed the “paste it here” boxes for many of the functions yet. They will.

So if you want full blown creative freedom and power, learn HTML and PHP. Then go out and design some of the most stunning blogs to be found. If you are more concerned about the content, kind of let the words do the talking, then use the blogging tools that are available. You can have your blog up and running in less time than it took to read this article and now you know what is blog.

What is a Fail Blog?

You may have heard the term fail blog and wondered what is that? A fail blog is a blog like any other in terms of its technical composition. It’s the content of the blog that makes it unique. The fail blog is very much like the TV show America’s funniest videos. This blog consists of pictures and videos and stories of people who are attempting to do something and failing miserably.

Fail blogs are extremely entertaining, they often don’t last for very long and usually they will have a short voice over video that introduces the situation and comments you through the different areas that exist. You will find an amazing variety of failures. People trying everything from skateboard tricks to motorcycle stunts and people just trying to walk down the street.

If you just need a good laugh give a fail blog a try. They can certainly make you have a better day because you will know that however bad your day is, it is definitely better than that guy on the fail blog.

What is a Blog ?

A blog originally was a personal website meant to be like a diary or journal. If you are familiar with Facebook or MySpace, these sites and their user pages are a derivative of blogs. The word blog is the shortened version of the word weblog. A person would usually create a blog as a hobby to share their information and experience on a particular subject. The blogs are designed to be very easy to add new entries to, so the information on blogs is updated much more frequently than a traditional site. As the blogger adds entries to the blog, the viewers can add comments to the entries, so the blog becomes an interactive site. If the blogger is interesting it does not take long for that blog to create quite a following.

Blogs have been around for a few years now and have been heavily commercialized for business blogging so that today as you surf the web you often do not know if you are looking at a blog website or a traditional html website. Truth be told though it does not matter what type of website it is, they are both designed to do the same thing…. get information out to the public.

There is a common misconception that blogging requires a certain level of sophistication and that the whole process is complicated. I assure you that driving a car is much more complicated than blogging. The fact that you have found this article is proof enough that you can blog. If you have a passion for something, whatever the subject is, and you want to tell others what you know about that subject, you can be a big help to someone else who is interested in the subject but does not have the experience or knowledge about it that you do. That is the spirit behind blogs and it is why blogs are such a huge part of the internet culture of our day.
